Post subject: windows messenger signing itself on, though unchecked
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>messenger (more info?)

I have had the "run at startup" disabled, for Windows
Messenger, in both OE and Windows startup, but suddenly,
messenger is signing itself on to both machines, silently,
with no icon in the taskbar.
I only knew it started doing that because I got an IM from
someone, a couple weeks ago. I am not sure how long it has
been in actuality.

I have checked and unchecked and OK'd a dozen times, and
it still seems to be running, if I reboot the other
computer, and vice versa, I get the the little balloon
saying it is signed off because I signed in at another
location.

Please help, I don't want it running all the time, I
prefer to accept messages only at certain times of the day.

Greetings Linda,

Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior.
To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
