It would be nice to have some more information about what has happened
but it seems like other people have had the same problem as you. I found

System restore does not work in safe mode. Well, it won't restore.

Reason I'm trying to use system restore is because at this time, the system
boots up and within a couple of minutes or less, the taskbar and desktop
icons vanish, making it pretty useless.

I can boot into safe mode, however.

There is NIS on the system, a recent install, however I don't think it is
ver 6 or 7, but am checking on that.
