Greetings Al,
In order to have a voice or video conversation via Messenger, both routers will need to
support Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). Forwarding port 6901 will do nothing (this port
hasn't been used since MSN Messenger 3).
Your Linksys router most likely has firmware available that supports UPnP, visit:
http://www.linksys.com/download
After installing the latest firmware, go into the router configuration and turn on UPnP (most
likely in the 'Password' tab), then reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.
Your contact will need to get the SMC site for firmware updates that may allow him to use
UPnP, or reply back here with the model # of the SMC router and I can quickly tell you if it
supports UPnP or not.
