I am new to XP Home Ediiton. I have external drives that my Dell laptop
recognises alright but i do not see Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system
tray. Can anybody tell me how can I get back the lost icon?

maybe if you right click
on the taskbar and select properties
and navigate to taskbar customization
you can select that particular
notification icon to display/show.

Many thanks. But I should have explained in the first instance that I had
tried earlier the solution you suggested, and yet this did not work.

Not having the Safe Removal icon means everytime I want to disconnect the
external drive I have to do the System and disable it.

Grateful for any other suggestion/advice.

Thanks

see if these in your configuration
are enabled:

1) plug n play
2) wmi (windows management instr.)

go to admin tools then services

you might try to right click
on them and cycle
them off and on...

Here's an alternative approach:

David and db, many thanks. I followed David's advice and it worked!! The URL
you posted was also very useful for future reference.

The only problem I had was that I had opened too many windows, on the top of
each other and in the process could not see the instruction generated by each
step (as it was hidden underneath a window). To novice like me, my advice is
Go Slow and follow the step.

Again, millions of thanks!!

You're welcome. Glad to hear that you got the problem sorted out.

Actually, the URL I posted contains the easiest method of accessing the dialog
window and restoring this icon (assuming it's not simply hidden). The
instructions given are as follows:

[quote]
.......click on Start, Run..., and type in:
RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll
And press OK.

That will bring up the "Safely Remove Hardware" dialog window:

[end quote]

Note that it's best to copy and paste this command line into the Run field.

I've also tested this in Windows 2000 and it works correctly, except that the
user must select the option to show the icon on the taskbar, whereas this
appears to be the default in Windows XP.

Thanks for the feedback!
