Greetings John,
Actually Windows Messenger is a part of Windows XP -- it's always been there, you just never
noticed since you weren't using it.
You can remove Windows Messenger, but if you do, you will be preventing Remote Assistance,
Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize Messenger from
working (or loading without problems). You can just disable Windows Messenger by opening it
up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this program when Windows
starts'. As well, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove
Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the
components list and click Next >. Note: this is only available if you've installed Windows
XP Service Pack 1 -- if you haven't, visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't
remove Windows Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way.
You might also want to remove the student's Passport information from your Windows XP user
account (especially if they saved their password by mistake). To do so, click the Start
Button, then click the Control Panel. Then, click User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select
your account name, and then on the left side of the screen, under Related Tasks, click
'Manage my Network Passwords'. In the window that opens, you can remove the students'
account by clicking the passport you wish to delete [denoted by (Passport)], and then click
the 'Remove' button. Also remove the Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry (this is the Messenger
saved password).
