I installed WindowsXP last week, and have lost a lot of
files. All music downloads are gone. Many, many census
data worksheets that I have worked on since March 2003
are gone. Worksheets before that are intact but recent
ones are gone. All photos in last few months are gone. I
did a search but found nothing.
Is there a way to retrieve these.

If it was a fresh install they are lost for your view. You
will have to use a data recovery program. The more work
you do while the files are lost the less chance a data
recovery programm will be able to recover the deleted
files...

First of all, stop working on the drive. Don’t save any new file, doing so would overwrite the lost data and further cause permanent data loss. As once data gets overwritten it becomes highly impossible by any Data Recovery Software or Data Recovery Services to recover overwritten data.

Use Windows Data Recovery Software to retrieve your lost data. Do not install the software on to the same drive. Install it on a healthy machine and connect this faulty drive as salve to this machine and then proceed with the recovery.
