Turns out that the "error" was coming from my USB-connected backup drive
going to sleep!
The complete message was
"An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging
operation."
I only looked at the "D" at the end, and missed the "Harddisk2" bit in
the middle and jumped to the conclusion it was my "D:" drive failing,
since that's where my swap file is located.
Disk #2 is a 1TB Seagate "FreeAgent" that goes to sleep when it's been
idle for 15 minutes, and that's apparently ->sometimes enough to
genereate the error message.
Unfortunately, I'd already replaced my D: drive before I figured that
out. Of course, I replaced it with a bigger and faster drive, so maybe
that's not such a problem

I also got to find out that my Acronis
True Image backup software actually works.
