display picture messenger 6

I have installed messenger 6, when i go to browse for a
picture of my own to put in the display area, an error
drops down saying that the picture can't be resized, I
have a freind who has done this and hasn't had the
problem i've got, i've tried reinstalling it but the same
error still pops up. Any suggestions on how to remedy
this?

What happens if you choose another picture (with different dimensions)?
