Hello,
I sort of feel safer with the User Account Control feature.
However, I recently installed an anti-virus program, and every time I
start the computer it needs me to grant elevated permissions manually
(rest of screen turns grey and I need to click "continue"). I do know
how to disable the feature as a whole, but is it not possible to disable
the need to approve the programs I use every day, like the anti-virus
startup or for that matter some often-used games that need admin
permissions..?

What AV software is that? Are you sure that it is actually 100% compatible
with Vista?

That doesn't actually tell the user the answer he wants.
It tells you how to make a program always prompt for "UAC".
What the user (and I) would like is a way to make the program run at
elevated level without the prompt.
Thanks. |

While that is interesting it doesn't appear to be that useful here.
I am trying to work out how it maintains the security by silently elevating
anything that wants to be elevated.
Maybe I misunderstand what it does? |

Just INSTALL the program elevated. The app will stay elevated then.

Precisely, why isn't there a checkbox that says 'Don't prompt for elevation
again, I trust this program'? |

Wrong again you stupid idiot. Once third party software drivers are
certified the prompt no longer comes.

It IS that simple. I KNOW. Because I have installed every app I used to run
in XP, as admin, and I NEVER see a UAC prompt. (I do see the prompt when
installing, but never after that.)
If that is not they way it works for anyone else, well, too bad. I got mine!

The app does not run as administrator just because you installed it as
administrator. Installing it like that can help with some programs, but
they are not running elevated like you think they are.
If you do not believe me, look at Task Manager, and be sure to make programs
for all users visible.

No, it's not possible to mark an application to run elevated without the UAC
prompt.
There are reasons why it is designed this way. If you really want to
understand 'why' there is a short article you can read that was written by
the Microsoft User Account Control Team. These are the people who designed
UAC for Vista.
Windows Vista Security : FAQ: Why can’t I bypass the UAC prompt?:
http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsvistasecurity/archive/2007/08/09/faq-why-...-t-i-by
Let me know if this answers your question.
