Running Win XP home and when I boot I get a blank desktop with no icons.
This is the same whether I boot notmal, safe or last known good
configuration. I have booted to dos prompt and run chkdsk /r but still have
the problem. Anyone with a solution? Thanks!

This problem can be caused by ‘malware’ but check this registry key before
running your ‘anti‘ programs. Firstly, start Explorer via Task Manager by
pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc then on the Applications Tab click ‘New Task’ at the
bottom, type explorer.exe and press Enter. If it doesn’t start, you are
almost certainly infected.

Check the registry key by going to Start > Run, type regedit and press
Enter. In the left pane navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon. In
the right pane, make sure there is a REG_SZ named Shell and it has a value of
"explorer.exe" (no quotation marks). If it’s not there, create it by clicking
Edit > New > String Value then right-click it and type explorer.exe then
restart the computer.

Do you have no icons and no Taskbar (Start button) or just no icons?
Missing both with just your background picture is a good sign of a
malicious software infection.

Type CTRL-ALT-DEL to open Task Manager.

Click File, New Task and in the box enter:

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe

Click OK to see if you can regain control (explorer is what displays
your desktop).

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

These can be uninstalled later if desired.
