I am using Vista 64 bit, and Windows Mail. Is there a way to just back up
the mail, without including the rest of the computer files?

I've seen this program recommended for Windows Mail backups,
but haven't tried it:

http://www.staticbackup.com/windows-mail-backup/

Not free, though.

If you want the mail settings you will also have to backup registry keys.
See www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx and the section on WinMail.

i just found backup works, but asks 'do you want to save these without
properties?" and then they can not be found when trying to import them into
another computer. the file is large and seems to hold mail, but the new
laptop says there are no messages.
so how do you also save the 'properties'? that is never offered.

Ignore the warning about 'properties'. It is not related to your issue,
and is normal.
Describe exactly how you are doing the backup.
