Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>messenger (more info?)

I just purchased a new computer, and Windows messenger
was already installed on it. On my old computer, i had
MSN messenger, and I had to enter my password EVERY time
to log on. On this computer, it pops up automatically,
even after I have gone to Tools, and then Options, and
unchecked the "Run this program when Windows starts"
button. Is there ANY way to keep this from coming up
everytime, and is there any way to make it so I have to
enter my password to make it log on?? Thank you so much
for your help, this is driving me nuts!!!!!

Greetings Lindsay,

As for Messenger coming up automatically, do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed?
Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can
conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus
(Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the
clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck
MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Secondly, to stop Messenger from automatically logging you in, click the Start Button, then
click the Control Panel. Then, click User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select your account
name, and then on the left side of the screen, under Related Tasks, click 'Manage my Network
Passwords'. In the window that opens, click the Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry and click
'Remove'.
