Post subject: XP Hangs running Firefox & Outlook 2003 - What Are Fault Buckets? Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>help_and_support (more info?)

Could someone please tell me how I might find out what specific fault bucket
numbers mean? I am running XP Home SP2 and it's hanging several times a day
-- usually when firefox + Outlook 2003 are running. I've gotten a few "fault
bucket" errors, but cannot find any information on the specific numbers
shown...
I was having a similar hanging problem about a month ago and spent hours on
the phone with Microsoft. The techs involved finally concluded that Windows
was not to blame and that I needed to "have my computer repaired." Since
then I have replaced the motherboard and video card, but still have the
crashing problem. I've altered bios settings, memory settings, changed out
hardware, uninstalled security updates, and just about everything I can think
of to figure out what's causing this problem. I've got nVidia network
components integrated into my motherboard, and I've heard that there are
"issues" with nVidia drivers (network or video -- I'm not sure...). But
while I see postings of issues and conflicts with nVidia components, I
haven't found solutions.
I checked my Windows error log and although I'm not sure why it's not
listing more current crashes it does show some errors and mentions a few
"fault buckets." I've found pages of explanations of fault buckets -- but
none with my particular numbers. I'm not sure that defining these fault
buckets will solve the problem, but it might lead me in the right direction.
I'll post a portion of the error log at the bottom of this post.
If it matters, I've got a dual boot with Kubuntu -- and Kubuntu has never
crashed once.
Thanks! I'd appreciate any ideas. [I realize that the information posted
might not be specific enough to actually diagnose anything, but I mainly
wanted to find out what the fault bucket numbers mean... ] mcaren

Thanks for your reply. I would consider the redo you suggest were it not for
the fact that after installing a new motherboard and video card I did
originally have an XP-only operating system -- with the same hanging problem.
I discovered that Microsoft would no longer "support" my hanging issue
without paying (already used the two calls I guess...), so it was at that
time I decided I'd add the other operating system -- that way if I needed
internet connectivity I'd have it.
So, since XP was hanging on its own in my initial (prior motherboard)
configuration, hanging on its own with my 2nd configuration, and after adding
a new OS, I can't help but think it would be more of a PIA than it would be
worth to start from scratch... (I know this sounds lazy, but my initial
configuration led me to approximately 6 complete reinstalls of XP with all
SPs and updates -- I just don't have it in me...)
I can certainly see the argument that I've got too many variables to make
diagnosing possible... I agree. However, I would really like to know what
these fault bucket numbers mean. It would make sense that if Windows is
going to generate a fault code that there should be a way to find out what
that code means. I just wish Microsoft would make it possible for the common
folk to perform searches on the Knowledge Base that actually make hits...
Thanks again for your time. mcaren
