Post subject: Windows Messenger's logging in instead of MSN Messenger 6
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>messenger (more info?)

Hi
I'm using XP Pro. I have Windows Messenger 4.7, and I've
installed MSN Messenger 6. Since I've installed Norton
AntiVirus 2003, every time I'm connecting to the
internet, Windows Messenger automaticaly logs in instead
of MSN Messenger even though I made everything to avoid
it. I want MSN Messenger to be the first and only program
that automaticaly logs in when I'm getting connected to
the internet, not the Windows Messenger. I've read here
that to correct this problem, one has to disable the
protecting feature of the instant messeging programs that
the Norton AntiVirus 2003 has (despite of Norton's
recommendation to leave it on). I did that and it indeed
solved the problem, and now when I'm connecting to the
internet only MSN Messenger automaticaly logs in.
My questions are these:
1) Is it safe to do that? (Disabling the protection
feature that was mentioned above leaves you unprotected!)
2) Is there another way to solve the problem of Windows
Messenger logging in first, automaticaly, without losing
the virus protection of the Norton AntiVirus 2003?
Thank you very much
Mishel

Greetings Mishel,

1. Yes this is completely safe -- you *DO NOT* loose any protection by turning off this
feature. All the feature does is simply scan files when you receive them (via Messenger)
before you actually run the file. Even with this "feature" off, when you run the file you
just received, the normal Norton engine will scan it anyway. This is a convenience feature
only -- it does not make you any less protected.

2. No, this is a Norton Antivirus exclusive "issue". Along with automatically loading when
you start your computer, with this feature turned on, you can/will receive "memory read
errors", be unable to close Windows Messenger, Fast User Switching and running Messenger will
just refuse to work consistently and you will have difficulty installing new versions of
Windows Messenger.
