I use the free version of Ad-Aware, which doesn't protect in real time.

I'd like to try Windows defender. Can I run both at the same time?

I use XPPro SP3.

I think so but, more experienced folks at
"microsoft.private.security.spyware.general" can render an
authoritative opinion where Windows Defender is their calling.
