| I have a Dell 6400 with Centrino Duo 1.8Ghz and 1gig of Ram with Vista
preloaded. Eventhough I only have a couple of programs loading at start up
(AVG, Windows Live) it takes about 6 minutes before I can do anything.
My sister has a similar system and hers takes about 15minutes to boot up.
Is changing to XP the only solution?

This might help diagnose the problem.

Apart from the two utilities you mentioned, have you checked your Startup
Programs to see if there is a possibility of other unnecessary applications
starting up with the System? Open the run command (Win key + R) type
MSCONFIG > hit Enter > select the Startup (tab), uncheck any unnecessary
applications that might be starting up with the System. Also do a Disk
cleanup (Click Start > type > Disk Cleanup open it > select your drive,
follow instructions to clean out specific locations and temporary system
files.

If you see the drive light flashing at these times try right clicking on
the drive icon and go 'Properties'. Uncheck indexing. See if that helps any.
I assume you follow the proper shutdown procedure so the drives should
be okay, this can sometimes happen when drives get corrupted, but there
are lots of other things too. Try disabling your anti virus / security
programs and see if that make a difference.
Do you both have the same things, is there some common factor? |

This is just more sour grapes from Frank, a guy who isn't smart enough
to install Ubuntu. He also, for some weird reason, thinks that because
he owns Vista, he's something special.

Hummm...suffering from memory loss...again? How timely. I'm smart enough
to install ubuntu but not dumb enough to use it...that's your job...lol!

You posted right here on this very group that you couldn't install it
and gave up, liar.

I suggest that you kill file me if you don't like my posts. Or, if you
have self control, ignore me. No one died and appointed you moderator.

What I would do is a clean installation of Vista and only vista ie. no
liveware or av program to start with ( actually no liveware ever ).
and see how long it takes to boot up. |

So you solution is for the OP to buy a new copy of Vista (and need to do
a hardware driver search) or reload the bloatware that comes with a Dell
(and probably includes a free trial of Norton or McAfee)?
My suggestion is much better and much cheaper.
