Post subject: USB devices disappear or not shown in My computer.
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>hardware (more info?)

Hello,

Everything was working fine, but all on a sudden USB drives are not getting
mounted on the system.

This is exactly what happens:

1. When I connect a pendrive, it is shown in the System Tray's "Safely
Remove Hardware" but not with complete information:

This is the information displayed in "Safely Remove Hardware" dialog
-Generic Flash Disk USB Device
|_ Generic Volume.

thats it, before it used to show the name of the pendrive.

2. These Devices (USB) are not shown in MyComputer.

3. But they are shown in the "Disk Management" console but with no Drive
letter assigned to it.

4. I've googled about this issue and found a solution
http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/t-60377-Solved-Drive-Letters-Ca...t-Be-As
which worked for many people but it didn't solve my problem completely.

I'm pasting the solution suggested in that link:

*************** solution starts here ************************

1) Go into start -> run -> regedit -> hit ok

2) Navigate to:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevice1]

3)file -> export (the mounteddevices1 folder) and save to a chosen location

4) delete all the dosdevices drives (ie. \dosdevices\C: )

5) I cant remember if i did it to the "mountd devices" folder too, so dont
do it at first but if it doesnt work then do it after

6) go to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]

7) Export this too and save to a chosen location that you will remember

Cool delete the upperfilter key

9) reboot and try plugging in your device.

********************* solution ends here ********************

5. while following above solution if I delete all dosdevices drives (ie.
\dosdevices\C: ) in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices]. My windows is
not getting booted.

6. So, Instead if I just delete those \dosdevices\ which were supposed to be
the drive letters for USB devices ( I mean the unused driveletters) and also
delete
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
upperfilters key. Then its working but at the boot time its showing a blue
screen error ( which doesn't stand for even 1sec) and reboots and the screen
with boot options shows up the one with safemode, safemode with networking
etc..).

7. If I select "Boot with the most recent settings that worked" then I could
login into my computer and the USB devices are shown properly. But they are
shown until the next boot only. Even if I disconnect and connect them once
again, the problem repeats again.

8. If I just add the "UpperFilters" keyvalue data with "PartMgr". and just
delete those unsed drive letters from
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices]. The problem with the booting is
solved but USB device problem isn't.

If you need entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices here they
are http://pastebin.com/f1f703bba

I have only one hard disk with 3 partitions ( C: , E: , F: ) and One DVD
writer (DSmile. I'm using windows XP pro. SP3

Kindly help me in solving this problem.

Simple enough,in diskmgmt,L.click on the hardware,go to actions,all,select
"make active",close out msc. Also, the chipset installation utility from the
chip
mfg (intel, amd, etc),has the USB drivers for xp,might update or install the
utility for the MB chipset...

I did as you said. My nothing has changed except that its showing that disk
is active. Even now when I try to assign a letter it says the same thing

" the operation did not complete because the partition or volume is not
enabled. To enable the partition, Please restart the computer."

I restarted like thousand times everytime it shows the same error.
