The "Internet Connection Status" shows the Packets Sent count incrementing
for "My Computer", and Packets Received count incrementing for "Internet
Gateway and My Computer". How do I find out what program is transmiting
and how do I stop it?

Perform some scans for malicious software first, then fix any
remaining issues:

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.

"Increment" is not a verb...

You can download a Network monitoring tool, TCP View from
Microsoft SysInternals. It will show you all connections active &
data information like protocol and port usage.
TCP View available here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437.aspx

It's normal when you're not actively using a network application
for data transmission to occur in the background. Only if the data
is Malware based do you need to be concerned.

You can use Wireshark to display Ethernet traffic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireshark

Under View:Name Resolution, tick all the options, so that IP addresses
are translated to symbolic names. That may help you identify where the
packets are going.
