Start menu comes up randomly during typing

Da** this forum programming su**s (man, what censoring, won't even let me say s.u.c.k.s.?!) , trying to log in and then get back to the message you want to reply to is near impossible, as if I weren't frustrated enough with the Start menu issue.

Anyway I have had the same issue on TWO DIFFERENT MACHINES running Windows XP Pro for a long time. One is a newer laptop, one is an older desktop. At work we use Windows XP Pro also, but I think it is a corporate version of pro or something, because this never even happens at work, only on persnal machines. This problem is VERY frustrating because when you're typing fast and on a roll, and the Start Menu pops up, the next bunch of keystrokes do a lot of nasty things some of which cannot be undone and I lose work and it totally kills all my momentum. I find myself pounding the table a lot!!!

You are the first person I've heard of mention this issue, probably because it's damn near impossible to post a reply to these forums. Keeps telling me I have spam in my post. Brilliant. Okay I'm clearly very POed right now about this!

Anyway if you found a solution to this Please advise me. I would report this to Microsoft but what's the point, reporting a bug to them is even more impossible than posting to this forum, I have tried before.

Me too! I can't find a solution either. I have posted the question again hoping to draw attention.

If I learn anything, I will come back and post an answer!

Ok. I finally got mine fixed. I am using a laptop, Toshiba.

Go to: CONTROL PANEL
Open: MOUSE – opens to “Mouse Properties”
Click on: DEVICE SETTINGS tab
Click on: SETTINGS
Open: TAPPING
Open: TAP ZONES

In my case, the “Bottom Left Action” corner of my touchpad was set to “Jump to Start Button”. So I disabled the action “Jump to Start Button”.

This fixed the problem for me.

Even though I was not aware of having touched that particular area of the touchpad, it apparently needed only a barely perceptible touch to open the start menu.
