Post subject: Sound does not work on New Used Computer
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>device_driver>dev (more info?)

I bought a new used computer 2 days ago and can not get the audio to
work.

The monitor (Viewsonic Graphic Series G70M Monitor) has built-in
speakers.

The computer is Gateway 3200 with Windows XP installed. I have checked
the volume control settings and tried to reinstall the drivers that are
currently on the computer, but were already updated.

Strangely, I do hear a system "beep" when I restart the computer so
some type of sound does come through.

Additionally, I am unable to hear any music CD's even with headphones
that I have plugged into the tower jack next to the CD slot.

Below is a list of the current "Sound, Video & Game Controllers:"

Audio Codecs
Crystal WDM Audio Codec
Crystal WDM Audio Control Registers
Disabled Device
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Microsoft Kernel System Audio Device
Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
Video Codecs

Please assist in any way you can.

Was it working before you bought it?

I have no way of knowing the answer to that question. Do you know how I
can fix it?

The output of device manager shows you have a 'disabled device'. This may be
your sound card which has been disabled. You can try to enable it by right
clicking on it in the Device Manager and selecting 'Enable'. However this
may not work because you do not have correct drivers installed but it
should tell you what is the problem.

I looked up for you where you can download drivers for your gateway 3200:
http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?param=3200&st=kw
You could go there and download and install the audio drivers for Windows
XP.

But you can possibly also get drivers by visiting the Windows Update site:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

There is a possibility that you need to plug in your monitor into your sound
card socket for you to hear anything.

Note that the purpose of this newsgroup is for kernel developers and there
is very little activity here, very little messages this month. You may be
better off at another forum dedicated to helping you find drivers.

/Daniel
