Post subject: Sound issues with media center pc and vista
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>general (more info?)

Ok I'm not completely computer savvy when it comes to hardware issues,
so hopefully I'm just an idiot and this is a quick fix.

I upgraded my HP Media Center m7250n PC to windows vista, and I can't
get my sound to work. I've gone through all of the normal steps,
plugging it in and whatnot, I looked for the type of sound card I had
and it said Intel HD Audio (intergrated audio) whatever that means.
Anyways, I have gone to device manager and windows says that my drivers
for my sound card are updated, but still no sound. I have logitech
speakers, and according to their website, I don't need drivers for the
speakers.

I'm at a loss as to what to do next, any help would be appreciated.

Does the Speaker icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar have a red X on
it?

If not, right click the Speaker icon, select Playback Devices. In an empty area
of the Playback window, right click and check both "Show Disabled Devices" and
"Show Disconnected Devices". Highlight Speakers and press the Set Default
button. With Speakers highlighted, use the Configure and Properties buttons to
set up your speakers. Use the Sounds tab to test your sounds.

Also, are you sure your speakers are plugged into the proper output jack and are
powered on?

yes, there's an x, it says no audio device is installed. Not sure what
to do now, since all I've ever had to do was plug it in, I went to
device manager and it doesn't recognize anything new, and anything it
does recognize apparently is "working properly" and "has updated
drivers"

and yes, it's plugged in correctly =P

If you have a Dell, go here http://support.dell.com/ , select drivers and
downloads, either pick enter your service tag , or select model , then at
the driver and download page, select Vista as the OS. See if they have
drivers for sound card or onboard sound(whichever you have).

Under device manager I click on sound, video and game controllers, it
shows 2 things;

-Hauppauge Win TV PVR PCI II (26xxx)
-High Definition Audio Device

If I click on System Devices and then click on System speaker, I get
this:
Device Type - System devices

Manufacturer - (Standard system devices)

Location - on Intel(R) 82801GB/GR (ICH7 Family) LPC Interface
Controller - 27B8

System speaker is the internal speaker for BIOS errors (beep codes) and such.

High Definition Audio Device is a generic Microsoft driver.

You need to find the specific manufacturer of the audio adapter installed in
your computer. Visit your computer manufacturer and search for specs and any
available drivers for your exact computer model and consult any documentation
you have.

In Device Manager, Properties of the High Definition Audio Device, Details tab,
see if the Manufacturer is listed under the Property drop down list.

Once you find the manufacturer of your audio device, you will probably get the
latest drivers from their web site.

Yeah I had the same notion, I ended up finding out that it was realtek,
went to their page and saw something about vista drivers so I figured I
would give it a shot, lo and behold I have sound.

Thanks a bunch for your help!

Now, I have the a similar problem as unspun, however I tried to download
new drivers from Realtek and got nowhere. Could you post and additional
problems you experienced or found? That way i could be sure we have the
same problem.

You're welcome.

I'm very glad you got your sound back.

I, personally, would be miserable without my internet radio.

Note: Be sure to right click on the red speaker Realtek HD Audio Manager icon
in the Notification Area of the Taskbar and select Sound Manager to refine your
audio setup.

Are you sure your audio adapter manufacturer is Realtek?
