Post subject: Scanning/edit word doc.

I have an essay and want to scan it and then edit the text in Word,rather
then typing the whole thing out,looking for ways to carry ouy the above
function

You want what is known as OCR -- Optical Character Recognition. Cheap ones
are typically included with consumer scanners, or you can Google OCR to find
more. In my opinion, most OCR apps are mediocre. Only work well if the paper
is clean, etc. And formatting is lost. Myself, I use ABBYY software. Not
cheap.

Get an OCR program for your scanner.

Bear in mind that OCR programs aren't always that great (and depend on the
scanner and the quality of the scanned image), and you absolutely have to
check every word.

Contact the author of the essay and ask for a copy in machine-readable form.

Paper is SO quaint...
