Had to reinstall windows media center - now have an option to select a the
orginal OS (which doesn't work now) - would like to remove the second
option to boot from the old system -
Is it possible and if so - How?

Use MSConfig click on the boot tab, and remove the boot option that you no
longer want.

You can start MSConfig from the command promt or from on the Start Menu
using the Run option. If you are still having problems getting to MSConfig
just do a Windows Search in the Windows Directory and it should show up.
