Post subject: Remove default messenger account/sign-in name
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>messenger (more info?)

Hi,

my daughter has put her passport as default sign-in on my dads pc. (So her
name appears between the 'click below to sign in:' message and the sign in
button)
I have set options to not sign in automaticly and not run messenger with
windows, but granddad is still a little unhappy with the fact that on the
windows xp logon screen there is a message stating the number of emails in
my daughters mailbox below his name.
My dad uses nor hotmail nor messenger so i would like to remove the default
name and make messenger assume there is no default user.
Can someone help me with this?

Thx.

Greetings Jamaica,

You need to open & modify registry for this to happen. Click 'start' and
'run', type 'regedit' and press enter, scroll down to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Spftware\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail,
expand this key, (click on plus sign) this will open the number of accounts
setup on the computer, click on your daughter's account, and now in the
middle portion, you will see a Dword value reading 'Message Count', double
click on this key and it will open a window with some value in it, just type
'0' in there and press ok. This will do the job for you and you will no
longer see that annoying message on the welcome screen. But before you
proceed, if you are not comfortable with editing your registry, I will
recommend you refrain from doing it. As another option you may like to
install TweakUI for Windows XP available free at the following location: -

http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/c/a/fca6767b-9ed9-45a6-b352-8...fb2a267

After you run it, look for 'Logon' in the lower left portion, expand it and
click on 'unread mail', now if you uncheck 'Show unread mail on welcome
screen', you will not see any such messages on your welcome screen in
future. And if you are uncomfortable doing this as well, them you may like
to do the following: -
1) open a text file on the desktop, right click on an empty space on the
desktop, click 'new' and then click 'text document'.
2) Open the file and type the following text in it: -

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\]
"MessageExpiryDays"=dword:00000000

3) Save this file as 'unreadmail.reg' and then run it, click 'yes' in the
message box that appears and there you are done.

I hope this helps you.

I played a little with messenger and your registry tips and I think my dad
will like the MessageExpiryDays method as it permanently disables the
display of the message on the logon screen.

Thx very much for your help Captain!
