I have an IBM ThinkPad Laptop (model R40) and when I go to turn it on it
will not start up. I have WindowsXP. The only thing that comes up is "to
interrupt normal startup, press the blue IBM Access button"

When I do that, the cursor comes up and it has about five lines of
jumbled text and then it finally says OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND.

Is there anyone that could help me with this and give me an idea of
what may be wrong?

Thanks.

Sounds like some type of hardware failure, possibly the hard drive. Check
the boot options in BIOS to make sure the hard drive is listed as a boot
device.

Well, can tell you that this has little to nothing to do with XP, except in
that the problem is preventing XP from loading at all. It's quite possibly
a hardware failure with the laptop.

One thing you can try, which can help get the hard disk re-detected
properly, is to power off, remove the power adapter AND the battery, then
press and hold the power button for one minute or more. Then, plug the
power adapter back in and try again.

This will clear the CMOS settings and force the BIOS to re-scan the
hardware. In some cases, this is all that's needed to have the hard disk
re-detected properly.

How old is your R40, and what happened previous to this problem?
If you are still under warranty, contact Lenovo for servicing.
The IBM Access button should have brought up the ThinkVantage tools that
you could have used to recover your machine yourself; as yours does not
you may suspect harddrive faillure or data corruption due to malware or
other causes.

I am having a similar problem with my Custom Built PC. It all started about
2 months ago after downloading either the new Windows Messenger or Hot Fix
Updates....Really not sure. But what I do know is several days after the
download my computer needed to restart and upon restart freezes at the splash
screen. I have done a recover only to get the same thing. I even went as
far to re-install my old upgrade version of XP Home. It all started working
well until I Downloaded SP2 and my history of updates. Upon downloading
several updates and needing to restart, the same thing happened. I am not
sure what Hot Fix or Update is causing it. I do know as well, that since I
re-installed my OS, the Windows Messenger has been trying to re-install but I
wont let it due to suspecting it to be the cause. Though to no avail because
it all started again right after updates.....
Can anyone help me out on this issue.
