Printing causes "striped screen of death"

I can print a few pages, sometimes a lot of pages, but the end result is that
the screen goes to colored stripes (whatever colors the print job is), then
the printer stops. There is no response from the computer with the mouse or
keyboard, and cntrl+alt+del does not work. I have to turn it off manually,
then back on again. No error messages at any time. My computer is a Dell
Dimension w/XP, and 3 different printers that I have tried (2 Epson and 1
Brother). I tried different USB ports and cables and even connected one via
a regular printer cable but with the same result. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled the printers and the drivers, run the adware and virus
detection/removal tools. Also tried stopping/restarting the print spooler,
which seemed to help at first but it happened again anyway. Anyone seen this
before?
