I have two PCs and a printer on a wired network.

Both PCs are running XP SP2. One system has started with a printer problem
where a print job fails with the message "Print spooler was unable to
connect to
your printer" .
At first I tried to reinstall the printer. That didn't help.

I did a System Restore and seemed to fix things, but only for a few days
when the problem came back. Now I cannot get system restore to do its thing.
The first attempt failed by hanging up and was aborted by powering down. Now
none of the restore points will run at all.

I can print from the other PC on the network so I am sure that the problem
is local to the one box and not to the printer or router.
To be sure, the firewall has been turned off.
I tried to do a restore from the command line in safe mode, but I could not
find a way to make it work. I use the command
%system%system32\restore\rstrui.exe but it always returned "path not found"

Press winkey-break(or start/run 'sysdm.cpl') ,/Hardware tab Open the Device
manager and click the + sign next to Ports(COM & LPT). select the printer
port, e.g. ECP Printer Port (LPT1). Port Settings tab check the 'Enable
legacy Plug and Play detection'

Even though I went to mscofig and removed ZoneAlarm from the startup menu
and rebooted the system, It left behind a file called vsmon that was in the
list of running processes. I could not ping the printer successfuly. This
process could not be ended from task manager. I restarted ZA and checked
and found that the printer's IP address was NOT listed as an allowable site.
I added it in and the problem of printing is fixed.

I have no clue as to why the printer was not listed. The printer worked
yesterday but not today. I had not done anything to affect ZA.
