I am using windows XP in a school. We have a network set up whereby the
children can access their folders to save and open their own work but
unfortunately because the ages of the children range from 5 - 11 they
sometimes accidentally move their folder when they are clicking on it to open
it ( they haven't all gained the skill of keeping the mouse still when
clicking - in fact some of the adults in our establishment also do the same
thing) and I was wondering if and how I could prevent this from happening.

It is not so much that the mouse is moving; but that they are holding down
the mouse button, instead of quickly clicking it, and releasing it..

To move folders you need the "Create" permission in the target folder,
use your NTFS permissions and set them accordingly, you can use
"Advanced NTFS Permissions" to specifically deny folder creation. I
don't know where the students are copying the folder to (a move is a
Copy & Delete operation) but this may just simply be a case of NTFS
permissions being a bit too lose.

I tried Googling "disable drag and drop in explorer" for this question.

There is a discussion about this problem here -
<http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/lofiversion/index.php/t6650.html>

It would seem that there is no simple solution, but they do offer a fix
(more of a kludge really) at the bottom of the page.

Hope this helps, a bit.

It isn't isolated to 5-11 year olds. Adults in my office can't do it
either. LOL

That issue is one common usability problem where Tweak-UI
is handy. I usually increase the mouse "Drag" sensitivity to a higher
value to help avoid that issue. Frequently customers ask me to help
locate misplaced folders from a "Drag-&-Drop" operation. Music
content gets into Pictures or vice-versa.

Many thanks for reply I will give this a try and see what happens. Otherwise
I'll just have to keep plugging the 'click then press enter' option which we
try to use already but there are just those children who think they know it
all and don't listen!!

Perhaps Microsoft's free program "Steady State" could help out here?

Here are a few ideas:

1. After a click to highlight a file or folder, the Enter key will open
the item. That's a bit of a nuisance, but once you're in the habit,
it's quite effective.

2. Set items to open with a single-click.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/singleclick.mspx

3. Ctrl/Z will undo a move or copy. That can restore a "lost" folder..
save the day in many cases. It reverses the last operation within a
window, so one could go back to the Desktop, or an Explore window, see
their error and still correct it.

There are a lot of desktop icon position savers onine. Perhaps one of
those, scheduled to run once an hour, day, whatever, or even with an
icon to use it anytime, might help. Set it up, Save the desktop setup,
then only allow access to, or schedule, the Desktop Restore feature.
Not positive, but I think this is the one I'm using:
http://www.midiox.com/index.htm?http://www.midiox.com/desktoprestore.htm

There are many others available; SourceForge.com has one too.

Frank-FL,
That setting applies only to the Start Menu.

You are correct. I don't drag and drop anything and I
highly discourage this practice. I should not have replied
with an incorrect reply.

Me too! 'Drag and Drop' is an accident waiting to happen.
I wish it could be disabled globally.

No problem. Many people do just that, even about this very setting.
