Using XP: lately, when I open IE8 from the desktop icon, instead of opening
my homepage (my.msn.com) I get a window which says Internet Explorer cannot
display the webpage.
If I click on the Refresh button, the homepage may open or it may take 20-30
seconds before opening. Changing the home page does not help.
This is something new - usually the home page opens right away. Any help
would be appreciated. Thanks.

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Download and run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Reboot.

Download/install and utilize CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com) after that and
reboot.

I would rather try to change the way you wrote the address in your Internet
Options for Home Page, before doing any scan.
For example: http://www.google.com does not work in IE8 but it does in IE7.
In IE8 I had to change to http://google.com works fine.

What?

http://www.google.com/ and http://google.com/ both work in Internet Explorer
7 and Internet Explorer 8.

May be you never experienced the problem ( i have xp pro sp3) but I
installed ie8 yesterday and I found today that I had the problem that is
mentionned in this thread, everytime I wanted a new tab I had the problem.
I solved it by removing the www in the address.

And because of your comment, I tested again changing my default home page to
http://www.google.com and it works now. However, I had to change the
address to make it work, not changing the address would have give me nothing
and doing the scan would not have give me the page connection.

I had exactly the same problem. I never did figure it out. The only
difference was that whatever page I tried to open failed when IE8 first
opened. Refreshing the page opened the page as you report.

It was eventually cured when I was forced to do a clean install of XP.

Sorry for the delay in responding to the group: Checking the internet
addresses I discovered all my addresses are without the www including my
home address so this is not a factor.
I then cleaned my computer using my spyware, malware etc programs (including
ccleaner) and that eliminated the problem.
Many thanks to Shenan for the help.
