Now I could be totally wrong about it printing "ASCII code" but that's
what it looks like to me.

I have 2 computers (running vista) hooked up (by a wired/wireless
router) to a computer running XP. The network printer is a "Brother
HL-1440".

Printing FROM xp (which is directly connect to the printer) works just
fine.
Printing FROM the other PC (running vista) I get some sort of code--
boxes and letters: [][][][][][]sdasd[][][][v][]x[---] <similar to
that.

It will print images, and even the website address on the upper right
hand...but no text.

People say it's a driver problem but I've updated the drive on the XP
CPU.

Anyone know what the heck is goin' on here?!

It does look like a printer driver version or driver settings problem.

Is there any way that you can connect the Vista machine directly to the
printer, and verify that the Vista P/C does/ does not work properly with the
printer?
And, are you using postscript printing? If so, what version/level?
Are the drivers current? Are they "In Box" (included with windows) or
drivers downloaded from Brother?

There may be a driver option to print "RAW". Try it.
The printer seems to be reading non ASCII data as ASCII. This is usually a
communication problem, or a driver and or driver option setting related
problem.
Mismatched drivers between the P/C originating the data and the printer host
P/C can cause these symptoms.

It would be helpful to know (at least) :
The versions of the drivers on each machine and the source of the drivers.
The port type used on the non host P/C
Are both P/Cs running current versions (Latest SPs,patches) of windows?

Have you looked on the Brother website for possible remedies?

Make sure you have the correct driver installed on the Vista machine. There
is one for the Brother HCL-1440 on the Vista DVD and on the Brother web
site. It is a PCL-based printer.

I would delete the present driver from the Vista machine and install the
printer again using the version from the Brother web site.
