Mouse doesn't work after boot or stops working in middle o..

The past couple months my computer's ability to use a mouse has begun to
degrade. Is does not happen everyday, or every time I use the computer, but
it's starting to happen more frequently than usual (going from maybe once
every other week to maybe twice a week, and I use my computer everyday).

I could be web-surfing, playing a game, using Word, or just sitting in sleep
mode on the desktop and my mouse would just die. One second it will be fine,
and then it won't work. When it dies the pointer won't move and the buttons
won't work. I can click all I want but the computer won't acknowledge it.
Since I have an old PS/2 mouse with a ball I cleaned it too, but it didn't
make a difference.

At first I thought my mouse was going bad, but when I switched in another
PS/2 mouse from an old computer, the problem continued to happen.

It used to be that a reboot was all I needed to use my mouse again, but
lately it's gotten to the point where I'll sometimes start the computer from
a fresh boot (first time in the day) and the mouse will not work. Then I'll
have to reboot once, twice, or even three times from my fresh boot just to
get my mouse working. I'm concerned that one day soon I won't be able to use
my computer at all because rebooting will no longer work.

I haven't installed any new programs in the last three or four months (and
the problem with the mouse doesn't go back that far), so the only thing I can
think of that might have done this would be a patch file of some kind, but I
can't tie anything in particular with the first occurance of this happening.

Since switching mice didn't help this doesn't sound like the mouse is the
problem to me, but I can't figure out if this is a software issue with
Windows (something with the mouse software got corrupted?) or a hardware
issue (PS/2 port is dying?). Anyone have any insight into this?

Have you updated the driver for the mouse? if not maybe you should try that,
if it doesnt work then you can simply use the Roll Back Driver. Right click
My Computer/ click manage/ Device Manager/ Mice and other pointing devices.
