You are correct the IR emitter is stuck to the front of the set top box and
the IR reciever is plugged into the PC via USB.

CSM1,
The emitter has been moved all over the front of the set top box I can see
the light thru the box it is in the right place. I have also tried both jacks
on the back of the IR box.

I have done everything that everyone has suggested several times nothing
changes the fact that I can not change channels with the Media Center Remote.

Malibu,
Did you ever tell us what brand of set top box you are using?

As to the emitter being in the right place, it is not until you actually get
a response from the STB with the MCE remote.

Are you sure that MCE is sending the right code to your STB?

Have you gone through the MCE "learning mode" with the STB's remote control.
MCE sometimes must 'learn' the STB's codes for MCE to talk to the STB.

Remember you must have the STB's remote within six inches of the MCE USB IR
Box. The STB remote control led must be facing the window of the USB IR box.

After you are sure that MCE is sending the correct codes for your STB, then
with MCE remote in hand, keep trying to change to a different channel and
moving the emitter all around the plastic front of the STB.

Watch the emitter flash, when it quits flashing, move to another spot, and
try a channel change with MCE remote control.

I think I kept using the Channel UP or Down button on the MCE remote until
the STB changed channels. I was watching the STB on the TV, not via MCE.
That way I knew immediately when the channel changed, not 3 seconds later as
it does via MCE Live TV.

Somewhere you should get a response from the STB.

The IR sensor on the STB is never where you think it is. Unless you have the
service manual for the STB Smile

Believe me all of this has been done several times. HP even sent me a new IR
emitter as they said that was the problem but it did not fix it.

The type of set top box is Motorola and I do have a manual for it.

Does the emitter flash when changing channels with MCE remote?

Motorola STB and I woud guess the manual is the USER manual and not the
SERVICE manual.
Service manuals have all of the repair info and technological info.
Including the schematic diagrams.

It is not a Motorola 4DTV model DSR-922 is it?

If it is a 4DTV DSR-922, we are all spinning our wheels. MCE can not change
the satellite on the DSR-922, MCE does not know how to change the satellite
and the transponder.

What Model number Motorola is it? Motorola makes dozens of STBs.
Is it a Cable Receiver?
Can you change channels on the Motorola with just a three or four digit
number on the Motorola remote?

What service are you using the Motorola STB for Cable TV, satellite or over
the air?
Who is your TV service provider?

The emitter flashes when I use the MCE remote and the keyboard and the
display says the channel changed but it does not physically change the
channel.
The set top box is a Motorola DCT700. It is a digital cable box. My service
provider our local telephone and cable company here in NC.

Hi Barb,
I just got off the phone with SONY PC customer support for help with my Sony Vaio VGC-LT35E. They insisted that the Windows Media Center Remote and Guide CAN NOT change Comcast Digital channels. I should be happy that I have a Comcast box (by the way it is MOTOROLA # GI1417TDF947) that has its own remote and that the Comcast remote can change channels. So I asked why this computer has an infrared transmitter built into the Vaio system. They responded it is for older cable boxes – those that do not come with their own remote. They said they have had numerous calls regarding this same problem and have been telling their customers that there is no problem it works as it should – i.e. the WMC Remote and Guide is not suppose to be able to change Comcast Digital channels. What is your response to this statement? Are they simply untruthful because they have no solution to the problem? Or What?

P.S. It is funny because I called them once before and they said that if I had Windows XP installed that the Windows Media Center Remote and Guide would change Comcast Digital channels.

are you running Vista or XP (you mention XP but in a different frame
of reference).

That G # is a serial number of some type. Moto stb's are usually 4
digits with a prefix in front of them Can you check the model #
again please?

as for the IR - you would need a Media Center ehome IR receiver. the
standard IR ports on computers are not ehome receivers. does device
manager show an ehome receiver? if yes, did the machine come with an
IR blaster to stick on the STB? the sticky part of the blaster needs
to be exactly over the "eye" on the stb where the IR receiver is.
use a flashlight to find it.

For some reason the original question/post by "unknown" shows as blank;
however, based on the replies this may be a similar problem that I have
experienced. Could you please post the original question/problem? I am
currently running Windows Media Center 2002, and some time ago added satelite
to the computer. We have a similar problem (I think) changing channels, and
through some advice was directed to add an IR receiver, but have not gotten
it to work.

Would appreciate the additional information to see if it is applicable to
our system.

you speak of changing channels. do you mean with the remote numeric
keys/page up/down on the remote or both? is MCE recognizing the
remote at all?

Barb, I might have the same problem, or a similar one: Here's my
setup:
ATI TV wonder 650 USB
Vista Ultimate (I also have XP Pro -- both x86 and x64, if necessary.
Also have Vista Ultimate x64 if necessary).
A Microsoft WMC Remote -- P/N X801143-107 -- Model No.1039 -- RC6 IR
Comcast Digital Cable (from wall)
Comcast set-top box -- Model no. DCT700/US
F/G no.633196-004-00
Phase 2.7 Platform ID 176
Comcast-supplied remote.
NO IR-blaster cables, though I do have the IR receiver, and the Media
center Remote does work, but not for setting up TV reception in MEdia
Center. I think I threw away the IR blaster cables, since the glue on
them wouldnt stick. I also have the IR receiver for the WMC Remote,
but no IR blaster cables.


The Problem:
With latest updates to WMC, I can do most of the setup, to where the
Composite shows a picture and sound during setup (I can even change
channels in the small window with the Comcast remote, but cant finish
last step since neither the Comcast-supplied remote, nor the Microsoft
Remote are recognized [for this step], not having IR blaster cables
attached.

So, I know MEdia Center works with my comcast cable box, but lack of
proper cables keeps me from completeing all steps in setup.

So close, yet so far away!!!. I guess I could watch in the little
window shown in setup, but that's kind of tacky, dont you think?

Is it even possible to finish setting up TV reception in MEdia Center,
and if it is, HOW do I do it? Im a complete nubie when it comes to
WMC.

My experience has been that the Comcast remote works well when the batteries are really strong, but as the charge went down, I would lose the ability to change channels quickly.

Here is my question though - I don't want to deal with ANY remote, whether Comcast's or the one that came with my Sony VAIO. Why can't my KEYBOARD change channels?? When I put the numbers in on the keyboard, they show up on the screen and the picture pauses - it just isn't making the switch to the other channel. I feel like there must just be an additional step to make this work, but I don't know what it is. Can anyone help?

remote needs to be pointed at the MC IR receiver. You should have an IR bug stuck on the front of
the STB over its IR receiver & the other end of the wire is plugged into the MC IR receiver. It's

If you have never ever been able to change channel with the Media Center remote even intermittently
then I would suspect some hardware problem (IR receiver or IR bug).

Please confirm that you have the 1/8" plug of the IR bug plugged into the Media Center IR receiver &

the light thru the box it is in the right place. I have also tried both jacks
on the back of the IR box.

As to the emitter being in the right place, it is not until you actually get
a response from the STB with the MCE remote.

Are you sure that MCE is sending the right code to your STB?

Have you gone through the MCE "learning mode" with the STB's remote control.
MCE sometimes must 'learn' the STB's codes for MCE to talk to the STB.

Remember you must have the STB's remote within six inches of the MCE USB IR
Box. The STB remote control led must be facing the window of the USB IR box.

After you are sure that MCE is sending the correct codes for your STB, then
with MCE remote in hand, keep trying to change to a different channel and
moving the emitter all around the plastic front of the STB.

Watch the emitter flash, when it quits flashing, move to another spot, and
try a channel change with MCE remote control.

I think I kept using the Channel UP or Down button on the MCE remote until
the STB changed channels. I was watching the STB on the TV, not via MCE.
That way I knew immediately when the channel changed, not 3 seconds later as
it does via MCE Live TV.

Somewhere you should get a response from the STB.

The IR sensor on the STB is never where you think it is. Unless you have the
service manual for the STB :)

Do you have an MC MCE compatible IR receiver and an IR blaster installed to
emulates your Comcast remote to allow you to change the channel on your
Comcast tuner STB from your MC PC keyboard? If not what method are you
trying to use to tell the Comcast STB to change its channel which it
apparently is sending to your PC over channel 3 or 4.
