Is there anyway to turn off the announcement about how
many unread emails I have ot the log on window (windows
XP)? I had it turned off before. If I read my mail from a
different location it never registers on this computer.

Greetings Louise,

To remove this, download the TweakUI powertoy:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp (see on the right).

After you have TweakUI installed, click Start, All Programs, Powertoys for Windows XP, and
choose TweakUI for Windows XP. In the TweakUI window, on the left, click the '+' next to
Logon, and choose Unread Mail. Uncheck 'Show unread mail on Welcome screen' and click OK.

I used TweakUI as you instructed, but it had no effect on
the unread email link, it still appears. Also, why
won't it open MSN software instead of going to Hotmail
via IE?

I misread your message. I thought it referred to the
notice in Messenger, not Windows - sorry.

Greetings Louise,

As an alternate, you may like to modify the following registry entry: -

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

After reaching the above entry, click on the plus sign, this will open
up the list of accounts setup on your computer, click on the account that is
involved in the log on message, in the right portion, double click on
'Message Count' and enter '0' as the value data. This should remove the
message you receive at the log on. Plz remember this is a temporary removal,
as next time if you log on again, and leave unread messages, you will still
receive the error unless you read your mails. So for a permanent solution,
follow Jonathan's post.

Also if you observe, as you click on the above key, you will see a DWORD
value by the name of 'MessageExpiryDays', if you enter 0 or 1 as the value
data, you may still be able to achieve what you want without having to use
the Power Toys.

Hi j,

Yes, that won't remove it in Messenger.
