What is going on with this Low Virtual Memory notice that I've been seeing
popping up on computer on and off of my network? I've set my computer so
that the system manages the virtual memory but it still shows up
occationally. My wife's computer in her office does it too. Is this a side
effect of one of Microsoft's updates or, as I've seen suggested in some
discussions, could it be a trojan in the works somewhere?

Thanks for anyone that has some insight into this.

This is a very simple message to understand. It means that you do not
have enough memory for the tasks your computer is trying to perform. The
three typical causes are:

1- Malware, which can eat up memory. This is the most common cause.

2- Too many memory-intensive programs running in the background.
Reconsider the applications that start with Windows.

3- You need more memory. As time goes by, and more software gets added
to your computer, the amount of RAM you originally started with can
become inadequate.

Open Task Manager on an affected machine and display the processes in
descending order of Memory Usage and then again by Virtual Memory Size.
That will tell you what's using up memory.

To add to Leonard's advice: If you still get these messages, it could be
that the disk is either too fragmented or too small to allow XP to expand
the pagefile.
It is easy to fix the first cause.
Only money and lots of work can fix the second.
