Laptop that has keyboard/mouse problem.

This has me well and truly stumped.

I have a friends Laptop he has asked me to fix for him. Sony Vaio PCG-FX705
running XP home fully updated.

The symptoms are as follows:

After boot, the machine seems to be working normally until the mouse is used
to select any function from the start menu. If I click 'start' and hover on
'all programs', the 'all programs' list will appear very briefly and then
disappear. Every time, rendering the all programs menu useless.

The mouse then exhibits eratic behaviour. If I try to click on Icons, it is
as though the mouse buttons have been assigned functions other than their
proper purpose.. For example, if i double click on the 'C: drive' icon in 'my
computer' instead of opening the drive, it will bring up the C: drive
properties window.

When I right click on an icon to bring up the 'function menu' it will just
flash as though it were there and disappear again extrememly quickly.

I have also noticed that the keyboard then starts to behave erratically.
The keys no longer work with the exception of the vowel keys, but they are
displayed thus:

á, é, í, ó, ú.

I have checked in the mouse properties to see if anyone has been messing
with and accidentally changed the function of the buttons but they are set to
default values. The Keyboard language and regional settings are intact also
and correspond to the language of the machine.

Full virus and malware scans have revealed a clean computer.

I have tried to do a repair install of XP, but the install gets as far as
the 'press enter' stage and because the keyboard stops working, halts there..
interesting to note though that the F3 button (used to exit the setup
process) works fine and will reboot the machine.

The fact that the keybaord fails even when booting from the XP CD indicated
to me that it may have been a hardware problem at first, but when I use the
Acronis True Image Boot Disk, the keyboard works fine. The Acronis Boot Disk
uses a basic Linux setup to operate

Has anyone out there ever experienced anything like this?? I certainly have
not.

Any help/advice/sollution will be massively appreciated..

Did you scan for malware and viruses on this Laptop from another vendor
other than the native AV installed on it?.

Have a look in the Event Viewer for error messages that might shed some
lights on the causer and you can copy & paste in your next post.

= Try system restore to where things were okay and working.

Then go through these cleaning steps:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced.
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit or you can send them here in your next
post) and click [OK] to confirm your Changes.

Click on Advanced Tab and scroll down under the browsing option and uncheck
this box:

then OK to close your IE Properties.
