I have a peculiar problem with Vista where Internet Explorer (initially 7
but tried with 8 as well) cannot resolve domain names, but nslookup and ping
can. If I use nslookup to find the IP address of a web server and type that
as the URL the web page is displayed.

Try to reset IE or this case collections may help. IE can't resolve DNS
names -

Hello Richard,

The managed support service of the newsgroup Windows Vista Networking is
now available instead on Windows Vista Networking:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistanetworking/thread
s/. Would you please repost the question in the forum with the Windows Live
ID used to access your Subscription benefits? Our engineers will assist you
in the new platform. The web link
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/ms788697.aspx introduces
more information about the migration. In the future, please post your
Windows Vista networking-related questions directly to the forums. If you
have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us:
tngfb.TakeThisOut@microsoft.com.

Thank you for your understanding.

Best regards,

Robinson Zhang

Turned out it was the anti-virus software.
