How big is the partition you are installing Vista on?
Other considerations: it might be a quirk with the optical media, the
optical media drive, or perhaps it's an issue with the controller driver
handling the optical drive. But if you tried a different DVD player, that
would probably rule out the optical media drive issue. Apparently, using
different media seems to rule that issue, as well.
Too, you might try a "flat installation", as described here:

If you don't have a previous operating system, as laid out in #8, under the
Resolution section in the article, you could use the Command Prompt
available on the Install DVD to copy the DVD to a Windows Vista Flat folder
on a hard drive, and then run Setup.exe. Here's how to get to the Command
