Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>general (more info?)

I'm about at wits end with Vista. I have multiple copies (authentic DVD, MSDN
DVD, MSDN CDs) and have tried them all. I've even tried swapping out my DVD
drive to see if that was the problem (it wasn't). So here's what happens.

I put in the DVD and go through the installation process as directed. It
copies all my files, but runs into an issue when expanding them. It gives me
the error code 80070002. I don't actually know what this means other than the
fact that it won't install.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, but to be honest, I'm about to
install Linux and tell my parents to get used to a new operating system.

Make sure to run the Windows Upgrade advisor on the vista disk first to
identify any troublesome hardware or software. Remove/update anything that
says it's a possible problem.

How big is the partition you are installing Vista on?

Other considerations: it might be a quirk with the optical media, the
optical media drive, or perhaps it's an issue with the controller driver
handling the optical drive. But if you tried a different DVD player, that
would probably rule out the optical media drive issue. Apparently, using
different media seems to rule that issue, as well.

Too, you might try a "flat installation", as described here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928633

If you don't have a previous operating system, as laid out in #8, under the
Resolution section in the article, you could use the Command Prompt
available on the Install DVD to copy the DVD to a Windows Vista Flat folder
on a hard drive, and then run Setup.exe. Here's how to get to the Command
Prompt:
