Post subject: New Install: OE folder configuration with (Hotmail) POP3

I have, with help from here, got my e-mail archives back into Outlook
Express... which is really excellent.
Now I am thinking back to how OE used to work using POP3 from my main
Hotmail e-mail account.
I do not recall precisely the OE folder structure, but I do recall how it
functioned. In Outlook Express I would have the 'Outlook Express' folder, and
then off it 'Local Folders'. Then below that I believe I had a Hotmail folder
(not sure if this was as a sub-directory off the main 'Outlook Express'
folder root, I expect so), with sub-folders that mirrored those that I would
see if I went and logged into Hotmail (Inbox, Sent, Bulk, Deleted etc).
How it worked was that I would work from OE. It would synch with Hotmail,
and messages would appear in the Hotmail subfolders where I could read them.
I would then drag and drop to Local Folders to archive or action as required.
To send messages I would either reply to what had been dragged & dropped
into the Local inbox folder or archive, or reply from within the Hotmail
folders. That created a copy in the Local Sent folder which was useful (esp.
as they did not get deleted after 30 days as in Hotmail directly).
The key advantage of this structure, was that I could (in OE) leave messages
in the Hotmail inbox after reading them. Things like E-tickets, copies of
travel insurance policies, the last reconciliation of my bank accounts. So
that even if I was travelling, I could access Hotmail, and access all of
these documents.
Right now, all of my folders are sub-folders of Local Folders in OE,
everything synchs automatically, and I appear to have no option or way to
have certain messages stay in the Hotmail Inbox.
The way it was originally configures was very useful, but I must have done
it about 4-5 years ago now. If anyone can understand what I describe, and
describe how I might recreate what I had I would be most grateful.

Four, or five years ago, MSN Hotmail was strictly HTTPMail, using the WebDAV
protocol. Only accounts dating back to before Microsoft bought Hotmail
(1999?) worked with the POP3 protocol.
After September, 2009, Windows Live (formerly MSN) Hotmail will pull the
plug on the WebDAV protocol, thus breaking the MSOE HTTPMail access.
Forever. Only Windows Live Mail, and the MS Outlook Connector (for OL 2007
only?) will still work, using a new protocol: "DeltaSync".
Since early this year (Feb., 2009?) Windows Live Hotmail has restored POP3
access for Hotmail accounts. But POP3 does not work the same as HTTPMail,
nor as you appear to have described. I believe the MSOE default is to
download email, using POP3, then delete it from the server. You will have to
manually configure MSOE to access the Hotmail POP3 server, and to leave
email on the POP3 server, if you wish to continue using MSOE with Hotmail,
and to have access to email on the server. There will be no folder
synchronization, and only the contents of the Inbox will be downloaded from
the server.

Hotmail is available to everyone.
Hotmail email(all accounts) can be accessed by anyone
- using the Pop3 protocol in OE, WLM, WM, and Outlook and other clients and devices(pda, cell phone, iPhone, iPod etc)
- using the web interface
- using the Http protocol(DeltaSync) in WLM and Outlook 03/07(using the Outlook Connector) and MSN Explorer
Hotmail grandfathered email accounts and paid accounts(Plus) can be accessed using the older Http protocol(WebDAV) in OE, WLM,
Outlook until Sept 1, 2009.
Hotmail new email accounts in general can not use the WebDAV protocol..the exceptions are Hotmail Plus(hotmail.com, msn.com) and
sub-accounts of a Msn Premium plan(msn.com)

Most Hotmail addresses I've seen are like someone RemoveThis @hotmail.com
Mine is BD RemoveThis @hotmail.co.uk
Do other countries have their own identifier (like 'uk') or are most
addresses simply '.com'?
If so ........ why is the UK special in this regard. Any idea?

Why not just set up your Hotmail account as a Pop3 account in OE and leave the messages on the server..they will be accessible in
both locations.

Considering that you would have to manually configure each client you use to
access the account, perhaps so. Not sure if it is better to set the Hotmail
account to forward to the Gmail account, or to set the Gmail account to
"POP" the Hotmail account.

Hmmm. Well that sounds like what I am describing and trying to achieve (per
my original question). I'm not techie enough to understand POP3, I just know
how I had it configured from long ago, before I had to do a re-install.
Essentially, I could see my Hotmail folders from within OE, and choose when
and what to drag into Local Folders. Similarly I could leave stuff within OE
in the Hotmail folders, go abroad open Hotmail and there were those messages.
The techie-stuff behind how that worked is over my head though, as I
probably last set it up (with guidance) say 5 years ago. Is there somethng I
can look into about how to re-accomplish this kind of 'two sets of folders'
structure. Does it have a name or anything...?

I got an email from Windows Live. As of Sept. 1, 2009, Windows Live
(MSN Hotmail) will become a POP email server accessible only. They
have provided details on how to change the settings:

John, you may have been able to access your free Hotmail account in OE via
WebDAV (in which case you'd have a separate set of Hotmail-specific folders
in Folders pane per this illustration:

However...
1. If you haven't accessed this account in OE via WebDAV in the last 90 days
(IIRC), you've lost such access.
2. On 01 September 2009, WebDAV availability for all Hotmail accounts will
cease and the accounts will only be available via POP3. See this somewhat

Hi Robear, what an excellent and comphrehensive post!
Yes the configuration that I had, and described is exactly as per the
screenshot that you posted a screenshot of. I have used my DAV protocol link
regularly within, well, certainly the last 45 days... (I used it daily, but
the PC had to go off and be repaired a month or so back) so that is still a
bit of a mystery why I cannot reconfigure it in the way I had it.
In any case, it would appear on the face of it, that I am now configured for
POP3, rather than DAV, and I'll just live with it. I ticked the box to keep
copies of messages on the server as well, that that will resolve that I
expect. I'll check it from the www to see that it is working before I next
travel.
Yes... I too had the issue of the port 25/587(?). That was very confusing as
the advice seemed to come straight from MS and yet was wrong. I'll also think
again about scanning incoming mail, and opening attachments directly from
e-mail in future.
So, as far as I can see, this question is now resolved as far as it might
be...

Yes and no...
On Sept 1 any Hotmail type account(hotmail.com or msn.com) will cease functioning in OE or Outlook if using the WebDAV server.
The options after Sept 1 are
OE - use pop3
OL03/07 - use pop3 or install the Outlook Connector(http DeltaSync Protocol replacing WebDAV)
Optional for both(install Windows Live Mail and use pop3 and/or DeltaSync)
