Increasingly over the past few weeks my computer slows
down (P-III 1gb w/ 512 mem). My processes list will
show "System" at 87-97%. I've let it run for over an
hour, and it never finishes whatever it's doing. I try
to end the process, but it restarts immediately. My only
recourse it to restart the system, which may solve the
problem for minutes or up to an hour or so. Any hints???

Hi Dick,

I am trying to contact all who have our same issue.
Let's compare notes!

My computer has "slowed" twice: Nov 18 and Nov 21. Both
were "cured" with restart/reboot (you, too).

I'm currently getting more "up" time than you (at least 8
hours). Doesn't that point to an invasion rather than a
buggy Windows Update? A problem in an Update would give
us identical conditions?

Post back when you find the answer!

TIA,
Kathy

dick;
Do you have a Software modem? An acquaintance was suffering from this. He
removed the Software modem and replaced it with his old external modem and
guess what? Yep, problem gone.

Software Modems (Internal PCI Modems)

"If you are experiencing high CPU usage when you connect to the internet and
various at other times whilst connected and you have an internal modem, then
the high CPU usage may be normal behaviour.
Software modems typically have much less hardware that a hardware modem,
which leads to lower cost. Because the software modem has fewer components,
it must draw on the CPU in order to operate. Some software modems will have
more impact on the CPU than others. CPU load can range from light to
moderate, to decreasing the performance of the computer. If this is your
situation, there isn't much you can do, short of buying an external modem."

Hope this helps. Let us know.
