For quite some time now, I have been trying to use the Hibernation method of
shutting down as I used to do successfully. I have tried using the Standby
plus Shift keys to access Hibernation because I have more than 1Gb of RAM,
but this doesn't get me very far either. I get a message saying there is not
enough memory to accomplish this task (or words to that effect) at shutdown.
Does anyone know the reason for this and what the solution is?

I think what this means is not enough hard-disk space to write-out
hiberfil.sys, which is in the root of the system partition, normally c:

The more RAM you have, the bigger this file will be, as it's used to create
an image of the RAM conetents.

But I have plenty of Hard Disk space too! Sorry, I should have told you
this. And while we're at it, I am using WinXP Pro, SP2.
