Error message - critical process failure
WMC vista has been working fine until recently got an error message saying "A
critical process in Windows Media has failed. Restart your computer. If the
problem persists contact your hardware manufacturer." Seems odd that was
working ok previously and now might be a hardward problem. Amyone have any
ideas what is going on? Got the message trying to delete a previously
recorded TV show. Any help would be great.

Whenever we restarted the machine & media centre, a few seconds later
it would report that same error. Although live TV would work, it
wouldn't do any recordings!
I think the final resolution was to go through the entire TV setup
again.

Exactly the same thing happened to my Media Center at the same time.
There were some windows updates that happened that night so I'm
assuming them. What ever I do Media Center crashes. I'm still working
on it, the sfc command line util reports some errors that it can't fix
and suggests that I look at the log file for suggestions, however as
this file is 4M long its about as much use as a chocolate teapot !

Ah, I initially suspected those as well, but we'd apparently also had
a few power cuts during the day so I wasn't entirely sure what the
cause was.
Does anything work?
Have you tried going through the TV setup?

Cumulative Update that was released on the 14th. I have tried uninstalling
the update to no avail.
I have also tried the System Restore option as my machine is two weeks old
and only has the OEM veriosn on it with no new installs other than a dreiver
upgrade. This just fails to restore saying there is an unspecified error.
Using a Sony VAIO XL 302 with standard components.
Any suggestions

Cheers David,
This worked perfectly. I went to my hardware supplier and the said to
restore factory settings etc. Would have had to back up everything and no
doubt missed and therefore lost something. Would have been a lot of hassle to
back up months of use.
Thanks
