Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>messenger (more info?)

On my fully-patched WinXP SP1 computer, I have both the original Windows
Messenger client, as well as the latest MSN Messenger 6 client. Windows
Messenger is configured to not start automatically; in addition, the icon is
set to be hidden in the system tray.

This morning, MSN Messenger 6 informed me that I had been logged out and
logged in on another computer. I noticed that the Windows Messenger icon was
visible in the system tray; in addition, I was logged in to Windows
Messenger. I logged back in to MSN Messenger 6. A few minutes later, the
same thing happened again.

I logged back in to MSN Messenger 6 and then re-hid the Windows Messenger
icon in the system tray.

Any idea what would cause this to occur? It hasn't happened again, but it
probably will. What's the best course of action? BTW, I was not logged in to
any other computers at the time.

Hi Chris,

It could be any number of things, but most likely another application started Windows
Messenger (for instance, Outlook Express, Outlook XP/2002) or you have Norton Antivirus 2003
installed. If it was, say, Outlook Express, you can stop this behavior by closing Outlook
Express and running this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg

If you do have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed, you can stop this behavior by opening Norton
Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by
the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then
uncheck MSN Instant Messenger (may also be listed as Windows Messenger) and click OK.

Thanks. I'm running Outlook Express and NAV (2004). I applied the .REG file
and disabled Messenger in NAV. I'll let you know if I still have a problem.
;^)

What is the purpose of the OutlookExpress\HideMessenger registry value in
the .REG file?

Hi Chris,

Basically it severs all connections between Outlook Express, so Outlook Express can't call
Messenger (therefore not starting it, or keeping it running).

Hi,

I have a sort of similar problem. WIith W2K I used to see
all contacts with their status in Outlook Express, MSN
Messenger would start automatically with Outlook. Now I
deleted Windows Messenger because I only want to use MSN
but there does not seem to be any integration anymore and
I cannot see my contacts and their status within Outlook
Express. Is there anything I can do about this behaviour?

Thanks,

Stefan.

Hi Stefan,

Unfortunately no, Outlook Express will not show any information from MSN Messenger on Windows
XP.

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for that. Do you have any idea if that
functionality will be added in the future?

Hi,

Near future? I'm not sure, but I know it isn't a priority. The next version of Windows
(yes, quite a ways off) will address the two-client problem a little better, so this type of
functionality stays.
