Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>messenger (more info?)

I have both Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger on my
computer using Windows XP. I have been unable to learn
what the difference is in these two programs. They seem
to be doing the same thing. Should I have both? Should I
delete one? If so, which one should I delete?

I have been utterly unable to get any information from
Microsoft - UGH!. It's enough to drive someone to Apple -
Double UGH!

Thanks for you help

MSN messenger usually is associated with MSN Explorer,
typically a dial-up connection ISP.Windows Explorer comes
with xp,and should be used as is,having and/or running
both will slow performance, and isnt advisable.

OK. So I uninstalled MSN Messenger and kept Windows
Messenger. Now I can't find a way to get to a chat room.
Does Windows Messenger not provide that option??

Greetings Whit,

There are several differences, Most notably, MSN Messenger 6 has support for display
pictures, custom emoticons, has a different interface, etc. whereas Windows Messenger
supports SIP-based communications services, Exchange IM Server, etc. Which one you use is up
to you, and a matter of personal choice (and based upon your needs and likes), however one
thing to keep in mind, Windows Messenger must still be installed on Windows XP in order for
MSN Messenger to retain full functionality (Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application
Sharing, etc.).

MSN Messenger is centered around MSN technologies (Hotmail, MSN Member Profiles, MSN
Mobile, etc.) whereas Windows Messenger is centered around Windows technologies (Exchange
Server, Greenwich/RTC Server, Windows Netmeeting, etc.).

Both clients however can make use of Microsoft technologies, like the .NET Messenger service,
..NET Passport and .NET Alerts.

Also, it's been my personal experience that Apple doesn't have that much technical
information about their products available, although they may just be hiding it from me =).

Greetings Whit,

In Windows Messenger 4.7 the chat rooms are available by opening up the main Messenger
window, click the Actions menu, then Go to Chat Rooms.

If you get a prompt to install the MSN Add-in, you'll need to find it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/addindownload.asp

Have you installed/are using Windows Messenger 5? If so, the "MSN Chat" rooms are not
available in Windows Messenger 5, but are available in MSN Messenger 6 and Windows Messenger
4.7. Assuming you want to stick with Windows Messenger (see my other reply to you in this
thread), you can simply go back to Windows Messenger 4.7 by clicking Start, then Run, type
(or copy/paste) the following:
msiexec.exe /x {ABEB838C-A1A7-4C5D-B7E1-8B4314B10138}
and then click OK.

Then, you can reinstall Windows Messenger 4.7 from here:
http://g.msn.com/5meen_us/121?plcid=0409

You may also need the MSN Add-In (see second paragraph).
