Windows Defender is updated often. Where are and what happens to the old
files?

The definitions are stored at ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows
Defender\Definition Updates. The latest defintions are in a randomly
named subfolder, the previous defs are in Backup. The only definitions
that are retained are the ones that were initially installed when
Defender was first updated. They are stored in the Default subfolder.

The latest defs are downloaded to the Updates subfolder, unpacked and
then installed, but retained in the randomly named subfolder only.
The defs in Backup are replaced when the latest definitions are
downloaded and installed.

I'm not 100% certain that the randomly named subfolder changes it's name
when the latest definitions are downloaded and installed. But now that
you bring it up, I'll keep an eye on it <w>
