Win XP Pro + SP3, Win Media Player 11

Every DVD that I insert goes to full screen mode as soon as they start, and
I am unable to get it to display not-full-screen, which is what I want to
do.

This is true whether it is Media Player or some other app (e.g., Nero).

I read the Media Player help screens and it says that there are keys, or key
combinations, that switch back and forth (e.g., alt + enter).

It's like the keyboard is being totally ignored while playing DVDs.

This problem is true for _multiple_ commercial DVDs (e.g., purchased TV
shows on DVD) as well as DVDs that we make at home.

How can I play DVDs in a smaller than full size window?

I want to use the app's control buttons to pause, FF, control the volume,
etc. None of those control buttons are visible in full screen mode (for any
app).

If the full screen picture has become so large that it pushes the control
buttons off-screen, it means that you have set the video resolution of the
computer to some setting other than the "native" resolution of your monitor.

Look in the owner's manual of your monitor for the native resolution
setting. Then go to Control Panel, Display. Click the Settings tab and adjust
the slider under Screen Area to match the monitor's native resolution. Click
Apply and exit.

If none of the resolution settings available match the native resolution of
the monitor, you will need to update the video driver.
