Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>help_and_support (more info?)

I have been having constant internet activity lately. Icon ( both in and
out at the same time) in the tray is constanly flashing even without any
programs running. I had a major IE windows opening on there own problem but
I seemed to have fixed that issue. The other 2 computers on my home
hardwired network do not have this problem. I had my trend micro firewall
delete all allowed connections then had it prompt me for program access.
Nothing strange was prompted. Any help here?

What is the icon that is flashing? What ios the program it prompted about
for access? What do the firewall logs say about what the internet activity
is?

What was the cause of the "major IE windows opening problem" you refer to?

More information would be helpful.

the icons are the double tiny monitors that show inbound and outbound
activity in the system tray. I stopped the random opening of IE windows
that show advertising with trial version of spysweeper and hijackthis.
They have stopped but the constant flashing on and off of both icons at the
same time still remains.

And what do the firewall logs and Process Explorer say? It's quite
possible that you missed some malware, that you just got the visible parts.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Security/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Also check the traffic logs on the router.

Remember that being unable to see windows does not mean that programs aren't
open and running.

You might also try the online virus/malware scan at Trend Micro -

I ran the process explorer but found nothing unusual but I might not know
what to look for. I use trend micro as my firewall and antivirus program
but I will still run the online version. Can I maybe send you my Hijackthis
Log file?
