Without actually doing anything special or installing anything new- I have
received the blue screen of death in Windows Vista Ultimate - error message
says APC_INDEX_MISMATCH. I have no idea why it crashes but has done so about
a dozen times. Any suggestions?

It means it's time to reformat and iinstall XP or so, or some other OS.
Vista is not the way to go if you care about your computing privacy,
freedom and generally want to get the most out of your computer. Vista
will just hold your computer's potential back.

I did a Google on your error and came up with a lot of links basically
saying the same thing, that this is a kernel error. That isn't much help
to you unfortunately. Are you quite sure you've changed nothing? Didn't
update any drivers?

This link, although it references Vista 64, has the most useful
information of all of the links I looked at.

http://www.vistax64.com/vista-hardware-devices/74851-accessing-dvd-cd-...e-scree

If you really haven't changed anything, then perhaps this is a hardware
failure. Here are some general hardware troubleshooting steps (and I
would start with the RAM):

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Tshoot

Without knowing anything about your computer or even whether you have
Vista 64 or 32, that's about all I can say.

One suggestion would be to try Linux instead. Been running on four home
computers for over five years and never had a crash yet.

This is a call on the Kernel. You did change something or you added something that is a mismatch .

I have seen this error before when a program was added that was not designed and written for the Windows OS.

Did you add any software or anything to your system lately.

This user has a problem.
It can not be solved by people just coming here trying to make
proselytes.

So if a user has a problem with Vista, your solution is to ditch Vista and
install an inferior OS like Linux? Give me a break. Why would the OP want
a TOY OS that geeks use so they can squak to their friends that they use
Linux?

The OP probably wants to get some real work done and needs a solution to
their problem.

Try updating the system drivers first. Make sure your video, sound, and
motherboard drivers are up to date. If the drivers are up to date,
reinstall the OS from scratch and try again.

Forget Linux - It's a Geeks Toy.

Your ignorance is showing. For some types of work Linux is superior to
Vista. That the fanboy crowd doesn't "get it" isn't surprising. They
don't "get" most things. <snicker>

That sounds like a oxymoron. If geeks are computer nerds, that
suggests they would use a more powerful and more capable OS, so why do
you think Linux is a toy?

One of the fundamental complaints from more experienced users is
Windows has gotten worse over the years in that there is layer upon
layer of unasked for and unneeded eye candy and bells and whistles
that only serves to slow Windows down. Classic examples would be UAC,
DRM and the totally screwed up file system which in Vista is slower
than ever if you use the Explorer shell.

My biggest source of amusement comes from reading posts here seeing
all the dopes that cackle aimlessly and obviously don't have a clue
what they cackling about and are too up tight to learn.

Well you are right. Linux is superior in many ways, but generally for the
users who come here, it isn't even an option. I think that most people who
come here would be completely lost with Linux. I'll bet most of the posts
here are from home users. Yes, there are business users like myself who
post, but I'm tired of people saying that for every problem, Ubuntu/Linux is
the way to go.

I have been in IT for 20 years and since Microsoft came out with the Visual
Studio Suites, I have been using Microsoft solutions ever since. People
that I know in the industry who use both Windows and Linux, usually work
with Windows and play with Linux. That's why I said it's a geeks toy.

I have set up Ubuntu to see what all the hoopla is about and even tried
OpenOffice. Seems like OO needs a major face lift and doesn't have the
capabilities of Windows Office, but OO has one good thing going for it -
It's free.

After trying to hunt down solutions to problems with Ubuntu, it was more
trouble than it's worth. I went back to Windows because I could find
solutions faster, I could get my work done quicker.

I could spend more time learning Ubuntu but what am I going to do with it?
I can't make a living with it. My partners and friends who also work in IT
use Microsoft as their bread and butter.

I just removed the hard drive from the computer and put it back in the
drawer.

I use Vista on a test machine and I'm very frustrated with it. I hate DRM
and UAC. I hate the fact that I have to right click and "run as
administrator" when installing. There are numerous other issues that I'm
sure will get better with time. When the service packs come out, software
gets updated to run with Vista, then it will probably be a nice OS. Now, I
pull what little hair I have left on my head out!

KNOWING the profile of the users "that comes here" is at best a guess.

My point is no single OS is right for everyone. Surely not Linux, not
Vista either. It depends what you use your computer for. I see a lot
of people posting here that seem to use their computer for very basic
stuff like reading email, surfing the web and maybe some simple word
processing. If that is ALL they use their computer for then nearly any
OS including lessor versions of Linux are more than sufficient for
such user needs.

It is free and provides basic word processing. The point here is often
the applications people buy get under used. A good example would be
Photoshop. A lot of business users and hobbyists have it, but I'd
wager less than 5% come even close to using Photoshop at it's full
potential. Ditto for Vista, for many it is overkill. If all you're
doing is simple stuff, why on earth would anyone want to install a OS
that takes up 50,000,000 lines of code and makes you deal with DRM and
UAC?

As I've said many times in the past I'd drop the Microsoft habit in a
heartbeat if some major software vendors started supporting Linux or
some other BETTER more stable OS like BeOS. The point here is many
people install one version of Windows after another ONLY because they
have no desire to replace their current sizeable investment of Windows
software. That in part explains the anger towards Microsoft. Hundreds
of millions of people feel trapped, much like some drug addict knows
deep down they are trapped in a bad habit. It doesn't help that
Microsoft has such a bad reputation and doesn't support it's huge
customer base well. The reality is Microsoft doesn't make great
software. At best it makes mediocre software that always needs to be
constantly patched and plugged.

ok now that everyone has finished hassling each other.....I have turned off
the automatic restart so that I can post the error message next time the blue
screen happens. I have Windows Vista Ultimate (pre-installed) and the
computer is 3 months old - a HP m8040n media centre. I also just did all the
diagnostic tests that come with PC doctor (part of HP programming). Tested
memory, motherboard and all hardware. No problems detected. Thanks everyone.

It happened again and I get the error message: kernel_data_inpage_error

anyone know what that is??
