Post subject: Auto-logon has become a Frankenstein
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>customize (more info?)

I was experimenting with a tweakUI-like software program and one of the
services was an auto-logon, which automatically supplies username and
password to XP on the way in. All fine and well...until I decided that I was
not interested. Uninstalling the software did not remove the auto-logon and
now, having changed usernames on the system, it supplies the wrong
information and dings me with an error message each time. I need to find a
way to defeat it myself.

It does its thing prior to the Users screen, so adjusting any of the
settings in User Accounts is useless. And searching the Registry for the
login name and password has turned up nothing.

Without fail, with every boot comes the message:

The system could not log you on. Make sure
your username and domain are correct, then
type your password again.

This is XP Pro. Any ideas on how I can defeat this? Thanks...

Have you contacted the vendor of your "tweakUI-like software program"?
We can't guess what it did to your system.

An noted (above), without knowing the software this is pure guesswork.

About the only thing that I know of which is installable, and gets going
before the logon prompts is a service. See if anything in your list of
services looks familiar (Start, Control Panel, Administrative tools,
Services). Start by disabling the one you suspect. You can turn it back
on again if that doesn't fix the problem. Getting rid of such a service
is a little trickier.

Don't know what the software did but you could try -

Disable auto log on -
1. Go to Start->Run
2. Type control userpasswords2
3. Check Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer

If you want it enabled for another account -

Go to the Start Menu and the Run box.
.. Type in the following:
control userpasswords2
.. now click OK
.. In the new Windows that appears select the account you wish to make the primary logon.
.. Now uncheck the "Users must enter a username and password..." box.
.. Hit Apply and a dialog box will appear asking you to confirm the selected users
password.

Click OK.
The changes will work the next time you restart your computer.
