hi,
I just finished upgrading to XPpro from Win2kPro on a Dell Precision
Workstation 340, and am having a challenge with the networking..
I have a linksys 4port router into a linksys 8port switch... all
computers are plugged into the switch. All computers are XP Pro.. 2
laptops, 2 desktops, all Dell, various ages.. the oldest one is the
one I just upgraded.. and it's the one with the problem.
[When installing the upgrade, I got an incompatibility message
regarding the 3com ethernet, so went out and got the XP driver for it
from Dell's site... and installed it after upgrading.]
Comp1 is the main computer (the first one bought) the network wasn't
working correctly before I upgraded it, but had in the past, I figured
I'd just fix it afterward, but I've done all I could think of and it's
still doing the same thing.
Here's the situation:
I am mapping the "My PIctures" folders from each machine to each of
the other machines so the users can open files from any location, work
on them and either move them or simply save them back to the original
location.
comp1 can see and map the other 3 units,
comp2, comp3, and comp4 are all working fine, sharing files, accessing
internet etc. these three comps can see comp1 in the tree when
mapping, but will not access it. When trying to map comp1 on any of
the other 3 computers, it shows in the Workgroup, but when I click the
+ mark to expand it, it does nothing, the + disappears but it will not
expand to show me the tree so I can pick the My Picutres folder.
Comp1 can map and see the other three machines, It does access the
internet and mail just fine.
(a related item) I created desktop shortcuts on comp1 from the My
Computer window for these 3 mapped folders and comp2 and comp4 (the
two laptops) are showing a red question mark.. I can still open the
folders, etc. I just have these question marks on the icons... they
appear after a reboot, when first made they are not there.
I'm heading over to my friends house now to work on this, and will
check this group when I get there.... I did read another message
about someone who upgraded from win2k to XP and they were told to go
and uncheck the "Use simple file sharing", so I'm going to check that
out too, but if there is any other ideas about what I may have
forgotten it would be appreciated..
oh, btw, I did run the network wizard, I did disable the XP firewall,
I have shared the entire drive as well as the specific folders I
wanted shared,
Thanks in advance for any help.
