How much longer will you be able to buy Windows XP Home CD? I need to build
my friend a new low cost PC. But don't have the money right now. Retired and
need to save up some money first.

MS is still selling it so I think it will be around for a while. Even after
MS quits selling it, you should still be able to find a copy--I can still
find W98.

Get the generic OEM version for your friend. Put the product key stick on
the front outside of the PC. Place 2 layers of clear laminated tape over
that. Backup the final XP installation in image format. Burn it to DVD,
you keep that, and give your friend a copy. Of course, give your friend the
installation CD, you keep a his/her copy that you make. Put both in
separate disc holders. Put them in a file folder for safekeeping. This
overkill method has saved me alot of grief helping family and friends like
you are.

IIRC, this will be available at retail into 2008.

If you're building a new system, you probably can qualify for an OEM
license, which is near or below the price of an Upgrade version.

Do beware of buying low-cost XP licenses from places like eBay; you can't be
certain that the install key hasn't already been used. If the price seems
too low, there may well be an issue.

I buy 90% at newegg.com and some from tigerdirect.com I think they are good
places.Having got anything off of e-bay most of the time the prices I see on
e-bay aren't that much better than the stores I use.
Thanks Johnny McCown
Ps when I reply in is it ok to leave message in reply?

I go to physical stores, myself - there are lots near me - but those aren't
the kind of things I was referring to.

It's more of a "when things look too good to be true.." situation. If it's
really cheap, it's suspect.

In fact it's helpful!

For years. You can still get Windows 2000 on Ebay.

Might not be a consideration with WIN2000, but it most certainly is
with WINXP.

I haven't heard of an large scheme to defraud by selling counterfeit copies
of Windows on EBay. Have you? I've purchased a few, various versions, and
been totally satisfied.

That's good to hear. I don't trust most folks when I'm buying
software at discount, but I must admit I've had good experiences with
what I have bought. Just don't want to get into a problem with an
illegal copy of Windows.

Then dont use Ebay for buying OS's you really need the real CD and
serial for. Otherwise, you may just be buying a copy that MS has already
discounted the serial number as bad.

I see no difference between buying on EBay or buying at your local shop.
Again, are you aware of some specific case where the stuff on EBay is known
to be counterfeit or otherwise unfit for sale? Note that I am *not* talking
about used or otherwise compromised packaging, only about stuff advertised
as new.
